How the Serie A calendar actually works
Serie A runs a symmetrical calendar: the second half of the season repeats the first in the same order with the fixtures reversed. That makes the run-in unusually predictable, and it is why Italian commentary talks about the andata and ritorno of a specific fixture rather than treating them as unrelated matches.
The winter break is short but real, and it reshapes January. Clubs return to a compressed run of fixtures alongside the Coppa Italia, so mid-January in Italy is consistently the busiest stretch of the season.
Kick-off slots cluster at 12:30, 15:00, 18:00 and 20:45 local time, and the biggest match of a given weekend almost always takes the Sunday evening slot. Unlike England, that pattern holds week to week, which makes the Italian schedule easier to plan around even when specific dates move.
Matches involving clubs in European competition are moved routinely to protect rest days, so a fixture listed for Saturday can shift to Sunday or Monday once the European draw is known.

A note on accuracy
Fixtures and results here come from TheSportsDB and refresh once a day, so they are current rather than live. For a match you are travelling to or paying to watch, the competition’s own listing or the broadcaster is the version that settles it — third-party schedules pick up a rearrangement last, and that is exactly the fixture most likely to have moved. Our editorial policy sets out how we handle this.
Common questions
- What is the Serie A winter break?
- A short pause around the turn of the year. It is followed by a compressed run of league fixtures alongside the Coppa Italia, which makes mid-January the busiest part of the Italian season.
- Why do Serie A fixtures repeat in the same order?
- The calendar is symmetrical: the second half of the season replays the first in identical order with home and away reversed, so the run-in is known from the start.
- What time do Serie A matches usually kick off?
- Most fall at 12:30, 15:00, 18:00 or 20:45 local time. The weekend's biggest fixture almost always takes the Sunday 20:45 slot.
