How the Champions League calendar actually works

The Champions League no longer has groups. Since the format changed, every club plays eight different opponents in a single league phase, drawn from four seeding pots, and all 36 teams sit in one table. Nobody plays the same team twice and nobody plays a country-mate in the league phase.

That has a direct effect on the calendar. Because each club has eight distinct opponents rather than three played home and away, the fixture load is spread across more matchweeks, and the final round is played simultaneously so that no club learns what it needs before kicking off.

Positions one to eight go straight to the last 16. Nine to twenty-four enter a two-legged play-off round; twenty-five and below are eliminated outright, with no drop into the second-tier competition. That single change is why a club sitting twentieth in February is still alive and one sitting twenty-sixth is finished.

Kick-off times are fixed at two slots on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the occasional Thursday overflow when the calendar demands it. Unlike domestic football, these barely move once published — the constraint is UEFA's own broadcast window rather than a national broadcaster's selection.
